Tell us something about your transportation habits. How do you get around Asheville?
Automobile, which is fuel-efficient and gets 25 miles per gallon. I walk whenever possible.
What do you think is the single greatest reason Asheville residents don’t use their cars less? What would you do as a council member to address this problem?
Autos are the most convenient form of transportation, especially for families with children and business people, among others. To address the environmental issues, I will encourage people to drive more fuel-efficient cars, and to use public transportation whenever possible.
Even if you haven’t held and elected office, you’ve likely been an active member of Asheville’s community. Please describe one thing you’ve done to make our city friendlier to walkers, cyclists or bus riders.
The main reason I opened a transportation business is to offer the citizens of Asheville, NC, cheaper transportation. I offer services for citizens who cannot use public transit or businesses such as Mountain Mobility. We specialize in going door to door, to places such as private residences, and basically make it affordable for everyone to use, especially the elderly and disabled.
As a council member, what would you do to expedite implementation of the city’s Bicycle Master Plan?
I will be the voice of the Bicycle Master Plan among the city council members. I will organize a forum to encourage citizen participation in the Bicycle Master Plan.
Do you support the Transit Master Plan? What, if any, changes might you propose?
I will support any plan that will improve the standard of living of our community.
What role do you think greenways play in Asheville’s future?
Retaining open space for the purposes of conservation and recreation is vital to continuing our city’s outstanding quality of life. I believe that the growth of these green corridors is essential to the life of our city.
The proposed 1-26 Alternative 3, which has won the endorsement of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce and the Buncombe County Commission, would effectively prevent pedestrians and cyclists from crossing the Smoky Park bridge. Which proposed connector do you support and why?
I do not feel that I know enough about this project to comment fully at this time. However, I will support something that will improve our community while keeping a balance between progress and quality of life.
Many funding needs pertaining to alternative transportation are deemed nonessential in times of economic crisis. Which, if any, capital improvements to facilitate multi-modal transit would you defend during a budget crunch?
Projects which provide a boost to the local economy would in my opinion, take precedence.
What is the most compelling reason to improve transportation options in Asheville?
The most compelling reason is to try to grow in an orderly fashion, in harmony with our environment, and to improve quality of life for all Asheville citizens.
